Morning Yoga Class for International Yoga Day. Part 1. Iyengar Yoga for Beginners.

Part 1 of the Morning Yoga Class for International Yoga Day is a 20 minute Iyengar Yoga Sequence for Beginners which can be practiced on its own. As we progress through the yoga routines in this series, the poses. (asanas) become more more demanding; so towards the end of the series, you will be seeing Iyengar yoga poses for Intermediate students coming in, including inversions like Sirsasana. If you are a Beginner to Iyengar yoga we would recommend that you leave out these more advanced poses in the later sections.

Thursday, June 21st, 2018, will be celebrated around the world as International Day of Yoga, sponsored by the United Nations. We hope that you will use our Iyengar yoga sequences to honour yoga and our teacher, B.K.S. Iyengar. Around this date, Yoga with Lin and Leo will be publishing an hour long yoga routine, made up from these different parts.

This first part comprises some standing forward bends, standing poses (asanas), and finishes in a resting pose – Adho Mukha Virasana. This is yoga for beginners so anyone can try this yoga routine. However, we would recommend you look at our Beginners Yoga series if you are new to yoga. The standing poses in this yoga sequence invigorate and strengthen the body and the mind. The forward bends quieten the nervous system and are often used to help relieve stress, tension and anxiety. You may need 2 yoga bricks. The poses we practice here are:
Tadasana (Mountain Pose)
Urdhva Hastasana (Extended Arms in Mountain Pose)
Parvatasana in Tadasana
Prasarita Padottanasana (Wide Legged Forward Bend)
Trikonasana (Triangle Pose)
Parsvakonasana (Extended Side Angle Pose)
Adho Mukha Svanasana (Dog Head Down)
Adho Mukha Virasana and Parsva Adho Mukha Virasana

Yoga is not a sport but regular practice of yoga sequences can improve fitness levels. Practiced correctly, yoga will stretch muscles and strengthen joints, as well as helping with mental and physical wellbeing; indeed many studies have shown that yoga can have remarkable effects on problems with back pain, shoulder pain and neck pain as well as demonstrating positive effects on mental health problems such as depression, stress and general anxiety. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/10/28/body-on-yoga_n_4109595.html?ncid=engmodushpmg00000004
