LANGUAGE PRINCIPLES
• HISTORY
Traditional yoga asana in suspended form has been performed for thousands of years, although “Aerial Yoga Play™” was created by Jen Healy with all original names and sequences that make up the unique, innovative, and fun experience it is, as well as making her own version of the equipment- the AYRx Yoga Swings. We have developed the framework for teaching and integrating ancient yogic practices into an effective, well strategized, user-friendly method.
• THE SWING
The equipment we use for this practice is called an “AYRx Yoga Swing.” Please use this name ONLY in referring to the vehicle for transformation that is used for the training and classes.
There are many other types of equipment on the market. This high quality deluxe design by Jen Healy is locally manufactured in SF with great care and attention to detail. No other equipment can be used properly for this practice. It doesn’t “translate” well because this swing is engineered and designed with superior materials that are more comfortable and fitting to the body based in the mathematics of sacred geometry. The leg loops and hand holds are absolutely necessary to practice this form of “Suspension Training.”
• THE GENRE
Whenever creating something new in this complex world of labels and language, there’s bound to be some confusion. Just look at the term “football,” used in many countries to describe what we call “soccer.” Then there is American Football- played with a ball on a field, yet very different than soccer.
Here’s the terminology I would like you to use:
AerialYogaPlay is more similar suspension training than traditional “Aerial Yoga” although for CEC’s through Yoga Alliance, it is in the category of Aerial Yoga. Aerial Yoga is the GENRE where AerialYogaPlay is the NAME. So, when possible, we want to distinguish ourselves as a suspension program which goes way beyond what is offered in a typical Aerial Yoga class.
Our program falls somewhere in between Aerial Yoga and TRX, with influence from Pilates, dance, traditional yoga postures, and acrobatics.
• THE NAME
Please please please do not change, shorten, or call this practice by any other name than AYP: AerialYogaPlay or AYRx Therapeutix (pronounced “Air-X’). This is the official trademarked names of the program and is VERY different from the genre Aerial Yoga which is not my creation. IMPORTANT: To be clear, this practice is not to be shortened to “Aerial” or “Aerial Yoga” because they are different forms of movement than this program.
