These commandments are about developing good habits to get the best results from the time and money you invest in your skin.

Many people asked on the original video why “wear sunscreen” isn’t a commandment. While wearing sunscreen can be considered a habit, so is the rest of a regimen. I wanted to make something that focuses on the non-product-application aspects of skin care.

Clarification: Retinoids are not exfoliants, but for the purpose of these commandments, they fit into the category with exfoliants.

There is some dispute about whether retinoids actually cause the phenomenon of thin, fragile skin that I described. I’ve seen it (very) up close, but here’s a study that flatly states that it does thin the epidermis by a substantial amount: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17927576

And regarding “use retinol in cycles”, I am specifically referring to high strength retinols and prescription retinoids, not your average OTC moisturizer “with retinol”, or a low strength retinol serum. If you are using a retinol product that is not producing dramatic results, I am most likely not talking about your product.

The 2 month/2 month guideline is just that–a guideline to get you started. You can determine what is best for your skin.

Best practice for strong retinoids is to start out VERY slowly, using a small amount once per week, and work your way up to using 3-5x per week. I’d say talk to your dermatologist, but they give wacky advice sometimes, and you’re probably better off using your own judgment when determining what your skin can handle.

When in doubt, use less. To quote my good ol’ slogan, you don’t want to create a new problem when trying to solve an old one.
