Work towards Hanumanasana (full splits) while hearing some stories of the powerful monkey God. End the practice with a nice, long savasana meditation accompanied by the Hanuman Chalisa on harmonium.
Getting your body prepared to enter into the splits is no easy feat. If you have tight hamstrings or hips, this is a perfect class to help you work towards this more advanced pose! Here, we’ll get a nice long warm up, strength and stretch yoga class leading up to whatever variation of full splits you would like to take on today. Have a couple of blocks to support you on your splits journey and don’t be frustrated if it feels like the full splits pose still feels out of your range of movement.
The important thing to focus on here is just letting yourself relax into your tight places and continue to try new things.
We’ll start class with some mindful breathing and warm up yoga sequences just to get us into the present, meditative mindset. Then, as this yoga class goes on, I will be sharing a story about Hanuman and his namesake pose.
We talked about Sita and Ram in a previous Savasana Music Series so following it up with stories on Hanuman only seemed appropriate! Hanuman is a perfect example of a Bhakti Yogi because everything he does is for Rama (God). He plays the most important role of the doting servant and this level of pure devotion is why many Bhaktas (people who practice Bhakti Yoga) chant to him. We want to exemplify that love.
Stay through the entire savasana in order to hear and benefit from the beautiful words of the Hanuman Chalisa. Originally a Bengali poem, these epic verses have been transformed by music to honor and worship the level of service that all of us aim to possess in our own heartfelt practice.
