There are many different kinds of Sun Salutations out there. Here’s a look at a common form that involve crescent lunges. Here is part 4 of your journey on yoga for beginners.
Sun Salutations are a major part of any yoga practice. Some versions include crescent lunges and others do not. Accounts vary on exactly where and when Sun Salutations first came about, but most accounts seem to point to this series of postures being linked together sometime in the 1920’s and 1930’s.
Many styles of yoga incorporate these series of poses into there respective practices. Ashtanga, Vinyasa, and even basic Hatha. Naturally depending on the teacher and the origin of the respective style – you’re bound to come across this set of poses pretty quick as you journey through your yoga practice.
Some styles include Chaturanga Dandasana (Four Limb Staff Pose) and others will not. Just like crescent lunges may also be left out of sun salutations, this set of postures is not written in stone.
This allows for tons of creative interpretations of this set of postures. You’ll hear the word “flow” often referenced when talking about Sun Salutations because when a long set of postures are linked together you “flow” from one pose to another.
We often find this set of poses toward the first half of the class. This set of postures really works on warming up our bodies for more advanced postures as the class goes on.
That being said, if you are in a more gentle class, this set of postures may be the peak of the class. Again, it all depends on the style of yoga you are taking.
With your beginner sun salutations it’s good to keep a few things in mind… Keep that knee stacked above your ankle… keep your hips square with the front… and most importantly – breathe.
How to do Sun Salutations will come pretty quickly as you progress in your practice. The hard part is linking your inhales and exhales to your postures. This takes time but again, we call yoga a practice – not a perfect.
Time to move on to the next part of our beginner yoga series!
